Company Moms

Meet Some Smart and Savvy Mompreneurs

There are so many fun things you can buy for babies (and new mommies!)
– from clothes to gadgets to toys to blankets. In fact, information pours into Babies Today on a regular basis about women who have started unique "baby" companies. After all, who better to design products to solve parents' unmet needs than the experts – moms!

Angela Chew started her company, Mommy Chic, in 1998 to provide women with smart and sophisticated maternity solutions. Recently, she expanded her company to include clothing for infants and children. This line, called Baby Chic, brings high-quality fabrics and a European flair to moms here who are "bitten by the beautiful baby clothes bug."

"Our fabrics are mainly cottons from Europe," says Chew. "I'm especially proud of our boys' collection, in part because I believe this is something that is otherwise lacking in the market, a European flare, very polished and hip but still very boyish. For girls, we're also innovating matching patterns and colors in a fresh, unique way."

For infants, Baby Chic features very small (of course!) sweater knits in classic colors such as light pink, light blue and white as well as solids mixed with stripes for rompers, body suits, little tops and diaper covers. The clothes incorporate 1920s-influenced styling but are designed with 2001 lifestyles firmly in mind.

The year she started her company, Chew had her first child. Now she is the mother of two. "Being a mother of two young children (3-year-old Kaitlyn and 8-month old Conrad) and running a business is certainly more than hectic," she says. "However, I feel truly blessed because I am doing exactly what I want to do, and with the people I want to do this with. My 12-hour work day seems much shorter when I am in the office with my husband and my kids. They are all part of the process in making this happen." Mommy Chic and Baby Chic are located at 235 Mulberry Street, N.Y. You can also reach Mommy Chic at 1-866-Chic-Mom or online at www.mommychic.com
